S...How well written, Amy. And how true, as always!
Such is the state of affairs in all art forms, and especially in movies, source of my anguish...
You wrote "Can these people distinguish a freshly-grilled burger from a fast-food filler-patty? I would think so. " - I am not so sure about this. After all, there is no shortage of people getting stuffed on the fast food filler patty, apparently having no discernment in taste. I think a lot of it comes form the hubris of today's "me" culture; the "know-it-all" attitude that assumes it already knows better or enough, that refuses to listen or learn or observe. Too many "artists" today think of themselves as the Picasso and Da Vinci of their art form, they are unconsciously incompetent and there is no easy way to fix that.
And then there the consumers of art. Your post reminds me of a dialogue by Aaron Sorkin in "The American President".
Lewis Rothschild (Assistant to the President): "People want leadership. And in the absence of genuine leadership, they will listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership, Mr. President. They’re so thirsty for it, they’ll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there’s no water, they’ll drink the sand."
President Andrew Sheperd: Lewis, we’ve had Presidents who were beloved, who couldn’t find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight. People don’t drink the sand because they’re thirsty, Lewis. They drink it because they don’t know the difference."

As an optimist, I would like to believe Lewis is right. But maybe Sheperd is right too...
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09135630624690768750noreply@blogger.com
